SPRING/Sahel

Map of the SahelSPRING’s work in the Sahel uses innovative social and behavior change communication (SBCC) approaches to improve nutrition at the household and community level in Burkina Faso and Niger. SPRING supports the Resilience and Economic Growth in the Sahel–Enhanced Resilience (REGIS-ER) Project, managed by NCBA CLUSA and funded under USAID’s Resilience in the Sahel Enhanced (RISE) initiative. REGIS-ER’s mandate is to increase the resilience of chronically-vulnerable populations in agro-pastoral and marginal agriculture livelihood zones. Our specific focus – and SPRING’s added value – is to help ensure that maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) and hygiene receive the attention they deserve, as critical underpinnings of health, productivity, and resilience. Together with Digital Green in Niger and Development Media International in Burkina Faso, our “community media” programming combines nutrition messaging with creative, community-based technology platforms. Promoting uptake of key MIYCN and hygiene practices while building local capacity to develop and disseminate contextually-appropriate, locally-relevant, and life-saving information, SPRING’s media platforms help build resilience in these highly vulnerable settings.
